Dana Point is the site of Orange County's best ocean harbor, and has been a popular mooring spot for more than 150 years. Dana Point's early history begins with a pirate raid. Hipolito Bouchard, an Argentinian outlaw, docked his fleet here in 1818 during his raids upon nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano. In the 1830s, the area was visited more peacefully by east coast voyager Richard Henry Dana, who later described what he saw in his classic book, “Two Years before the Mast,” calling the site “the only romantic spot in California.”
