Founded in 1964 by wealthy local landowners, the O'Neil family, Mission Viejo was planned in response to other rapidly expanding population centers in southern California. The Mission Viejo Company laid out plans for a city that would keep pace with California's growth with a focus on sustainability and environmental protection. The project succeeded wonderfully, and like the nearby planned community of Irvine, Mission Viejo became a popular city with a high standard of living.
